Thanks Carty!!

As with any new endeavor there are always a few glitches - even with the best laid plans, no matter how meticulous one is - there will be problems and delays . This week mine was tracking - what program to use to track traffic? In my earlier post, which started this thread, I said I would be using Piwik - a free open source tracking software. More or less a copycat of Google Analytics - just not as robust in its reporting.

So I decided to use GA tracking for my projects but the problem revealed it's ugly head because I want GA to report on each individual sub-domain and folder - GA reporting tracks everything as one domain (profile) and if one wants to track different elements across multiple sub-domains and folders in one profile - add code here, change code there, jeez. This was a nightmare - I consider myself pretty savvy when it comes to techy stuff BUT ... ever try deciphering Google's help pages - yuk!

After two days I think I have it set correctly using profiles and filters but who knows. As a backup I created a separate tracking domain on my site with Piwik installed, maybe between the two I can decide which one's best after a few months of tracking projects - granted, of course, I have GA set correctly..

Okay, week #1 - working on case study #1 (CS1) and so far I have 3 articles finished and researched 10 to 15 sites for RSS feeds, ready to load into ABS for editing. Also created a Google Blogger blog - the thought here, obviously, is another source of revenue from Adsense but primarily a backlinking strategy to CS1. Blogger blog would have different articles supplied by ABS, gleaned from EZA - with edited titles and a few new lines added backlinking to CS1. Anyone with different thoughts? Good or bad strategy? Even if Google deletes the blog I still have a WP blog..

Did find out, BTW, when adding Adsense to Blogger blogs you can't specify channels - so no way of tracking. Guess I'll see how that works out when checking out the stats. That wraps it up for now - I'm interested in any suggestions, comments and questions. As always - onwards and upwards..

hi dave,

first i appreciate that you report your progress.

of course 'every success' from my side.
unfortunately i had no time yet to create a blog with abs yet, maybe soon.

back to your post:

1 'gleaned from EZA - with edited titles and a few new lines added backlinking to CS1'

only recently i checked there tos of eza due to another post here. i suggest you do the same. they do not allow changing of their articles at all.
i think, the idea to create backlinks with some other blog is good, but maybe better use some other material, i.e. plr articles.

2 i believe, you should focus on creating content for the real sites and then - later - start creating links to it. in my opinion it looks more natural, that the real site improves faster and earlier than a support site.

3 while i by myself am some kind of statistics and tracking freak, i suggest, that you focus on content creation in the first place. and track, when there is something to track. for new and small sites it is not worth the time yet. it does not really matter, if the ten visitors came from a or b and if the searched for c or d. hence, time is invested better in expanding - and track, once some significance it told by the numbers.

i never used ga, but do use piwik (or should i say, have installed i have and old version running, working well, but it is a bit slow to work with.

for ga, the feature that would interest me is the integration with adsense.

for piwik, data is mine. and one can do whatever he wants to with the db-contents.

also, there is an air application to run on the desktop fething data from the server. pretty convenient, if it works. just did a quick look, and did not get the data. but it might have been a configuration issue, as i usually access the local versions of the sites.

for adsense, few years back, i created custom channels. nice, but i did not use them really intense.

what i do use is url channels to see, which site was used. that is, i have some 'generic ads' created in adsense for the different sizes and use url channels to see, where it was used.

as the url channels are maintained inside adsense and a not bound to the ads themselves, i think you would be able to track the url of you blogger blog with them.

keep it up, regards,
thomas.

Excellent points Thomas - Thanks for the insights!

Didn't realize - glad I read this before posting to CS1..

I agree, posting content scraped in ABS and will begin back linking with original content after blog gets traffic. This is part of my promotion strategy..

Agree to a point. Hello, my name is Dave and I'm a tracking freak - the first step to treating an addiction is admitting to it ..

Using Piwik - regarding slow, updating is one click within the app and creating cron jobs to run when you have above average traffic should take care that..

also, there is an air application to run on the desktop fething data from the server. pretty convenient, if it works. just did a quick look, and did not get the data. but it might have been a configuration issue, as i usually access the local versions of the sites.
Got it, use it, and luv it..

This is what I'm hoping for..

Update for Monday, January 2011..

Running a bit behind schedule - my daytime job created some timing issues. I have now finished CS1 - uploaded roughly 25 items to several categories. Logged in and checked all posts - all there with times extending out to April 2011 - pretty cool stuff. Next on my schedule is Google's Blogger, and then starting next project - CS2. Onwards and upwards..

hi dave,

ah, i read your post some time back and hadn't time to reply..

Using Piwik - regarding slow, updating is one click within the app and creating cron jobs to run when you have above average traffic should take care that..

true, but the one-click update stopped working for me. it worked until i think 0.4 or 0.5 or whatever it was.
no more, i am required to do it by hand.

but even at the time it worked, i had to redo some things. need some mods, that are dropped in update.

it IS nice, data is useful. db structure sucks imho and (i feel) can be highly optimized for speed and lower size. but i do not know, what they plan that might be need it as such.

i let it run and check from time to time. but mostly querying the db to get some sums by myself.

but even if it reads bad, i really like the tool. great features and awesome for being free.

i even did an 'integration' for my so called 'framework', i build to run most of my sites on. this way tracking can be activated at any time now or in the future. just need to create a piwik entry, and maintain the appropirate 'site' to this 'piwik id' entry in the according class.

i also like to use the server logs. a great alternative i think. just the things like details on the visitors environment can not be found there.

but of course, one could not track a blogger blog with that...

regards,
thomas.

Hello Gang,

I am waaaayyyy behind schedule - last two weeks have been extremely busy (late jobs - getting home in the wee hours of the morning) and didn't feel like jumping on the computer only to wake up with the letters asdf jkl; stamped in my forehead . Nothing really to report on CS1 - and I'm still working on CS2. Hopefully I'll have the time to git'r dun this weekend - need to catch up. Onwards and upwards..
